Leaving happy hour at Henry’s Tavern, on the first of a two-day Portland visit, I noticed a gathering at Bullseye Gallery. Liis and I decided to check it out. It was an opening night reception for “Facture: Artists at the Forefront of Painterly Glass,” including works by Michael Janis, Kari Minnick, Martha Pfanschmidt, Ted Sawyer, Abi Spring and Jeff Wallin. The show runs through February 25, 2012.

Portland Visit - Day 1a

On January 4, 2012, Liis and I took the train to Portland for a two-day visit. After checking into the Mark Spencer Hotel, we walked around, visited the Portland Art Museum and went to Henry’s Tavern for happy hour.

Among the highlights at the museum, for us, was La Bella, a single painting Titian exhibition; Three Ghost Ships by Chris Burden and Artifact Panel, a glass installation by William Morris.

SAM Remix - June 3, 2011

A large, festive and colorful crowd attended the sold-out Spring 2011 SAM Remix, a quarterly event of the Seattle Art Museum. Nick Cave’s Meet Me at the Center of the Earth exhibition was a focal point and dancers in Soundsuits performed. The evening’s program also included performances, talks, dancing and craft activities.

In late May, 2011, Kareem Maddox, my nephew, graduated from Princeton University, after a successful four years of basketball and academics. Family arrived from as far away as Abu Dhabi to celebrate his accomplishments at a variety campus events over three days.

A key member of the 2010-2011 Ivy League mens basketball champion Princeton Tigers, Kareem was first team All Ivy League and Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, in his senior season. He will play basketball professionally in Holland next year.

On our way to New Jersey for my brother’s older son’s Princeton graduation, Liis and I spent May 28, 2011, in Washington DC. Only four days after Liis’ U.S. citizenship ceremony, it was instructive to be in the nation’s capitol and experience demonstrations in front of the White House, exemplifying what she’d studied in preparation for her citizenship exam. We ambled around the mall and White House areas on a very warm day, with no particular goal in mind.

We made our second tasting visit to the visually arresting Novelty Hill/Januik Winery, and visited several other Woodinville wineries or tasting rooms, including DeLille, Mark Ryan, Bookwalter and Chateau Ste. Michelle.

Spring. Finally. After what felt like an unusually long, wet, dreary winter in Seattle, the past two days felt like Spring. Today, Liis and I walked up to the Seattle Center, which featured a typical variety of entertainment options for all ages, including the annual three-day World Rhythm Festival.

Lake Union Park

Seattle’s new Lake Union Park opened last Fall. I made my first visit on a decidedly brisk April 9, 2011. An urban park, tucked into the south edge of Lake Union, the 12-acre park is a positive addition to the local area. With the burgeoning South Lake Union neighborhood nearby, The Center For Wooden Boats next door and the planned move of the Museum of History and Industry to the building formerly housing the Naval Reserve Armory, it is an exciting time for the area.

On March 8, 2011, members of the Henry Contemporaries toured Fabrication Specialties and previewed a public art work by Seattle artist Ginny Ruffner under construction at the facility. The Contemporaries are a patron-level membership group of the Henry Art Gallery. Located in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, Fabrication Specialties works with artists to turn ideas into reality. Ruffner’s work, The Urban Garden, will be installed at Seventh Avenue and Union Street, in downtown Seattle, in April 2011.

Art and the Environment: A Panel Discussion

On March 2, 2011, the Seattle Art Museum and the Cascade Land Conservancy presented an insightful panel on Race, Class and the Environment. The event was held in the museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. Panelists included Julie Nelson, director, Seattle Office For Civil Rights; Tracy Rector, executive director, Longhouse Media; Dr. Sharon Sutton, professor of architecture, University of Washington; and was moderated by Donald Byrd, choreographer and artistic director, Spectrum Dance Theater. The panel was part of an ongoing series of presentations on Art and the Environment.

Henry Contemporaries Visit SEASON

On February 23, 2011, members of the Henry Contemporaries - a patron level group of the Henry Art Gallery - enjoyed a private visit and reception at SEASON, a gallery in the home of Seattle artist Robert Yoder. The gallery is currently exhibiting collages and photographs by Ruth Van Beek and oil paintings by Philip Miner. Yoder, Miner and Henry associate curator Sara Krajewski offered remarks about the gallery and the art.

Let’s Take Belltown Back

The Let’s Take Belltown Back event began a process aimed at addressing both real issues facing the community and an improving an arguably unfair image of Belltown held by many in Seattle.

Seattle Waterfront Public Kick-Off Event

In Seattle, the process is underway to replace the aging Alaska Way Viaduct with a tunnel. When the hulking mass of the viaduct is removed, it will open up opportunities to redevelop the downtown Seattle waterfront. Towards that end, a Waterfront Public Kick-Off Event was held on February 17, 2011, at the Seattle Aquarium, to provide information and elicit input on the re-design process.
